Magic Flight Studio’s Story

Magic Flight Studios was originally founded under the name Market Compass in 2015 with the mission to help emerging companies accelerate their growth through market research, marketing strategy and execution services. Since that time, it has become abundantly clear that one of the most fundamental needs for growing companies is powerful storytelling that engages, persuades, and ultimately converts audiences to loyal customers. We have since evolved our business model to integrate and emphasize storytelling alongside insightful market research and growth-focused marketing strategy and execution.

The name Magic Flight Studios was inspired by Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, a storytelling framework for some of the greatest stories including the Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Toy Story, and Lord of the Rings. The ‘Magic Flight’ is the part of the Hero’s Journey where an ordinary person makes a choice to become something more – a hero. Similarly, we want to help emerging companies go from average to something great.

Magic Flight Studios has worked with over 25 growing companies primarily in the business-to-business, technology, and non-profit industries.

Chris Deardorff
CEO and Founder

A driven and creative marketing professional of over 10 years, Chris possesses in-depth global marketing and sales experience working with Fortune 500 companies such as GE, Avnet Technologies, MedTronic, TerumoBCT, and Seagate Technologies. He also has consulted and worked with fast-growing emerging companies including Kickfurther, Pixmoto, EvolveLab, Zometool, CBST Adventures, Fanzee, DMI.io, and Agile Partnering.

Throughout his career, Chris has been responsible for developing marketing and business strategies that have generated rapid, double-digit financial growth. His experience includes developing marketing and business plans, product roadmaps, and go-to-market initiatives that have helped companies effectively launch, market, and grow new products.

Additionally, Chris has extensive experience in developing and executing product value propositions, positioning and key messaging strategies and tactics while driving the development of dynamic sales and marketing assets spanning from traditional marketing materials to innovative web, mobile-based, and interactive marketing tools.

Chris is a graduate of the Stanford Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program. Chris has earned an MBA in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado – Boulder. Chris also has an undergraduate degree in Business Finance from the University of Colorado – Boulder, where he was a scholar of the selective Presidents Leadership Class.

Allie Ahearn
Storytelling Content Strategist

Allie is a marketing and strategy professional with experience in a wide range of industries, from IoT hardware and medical research to higher education, international development, and sustainability. What binds her diverse experience together is a desire to help clients meet audacious goals with her keen eye for strategy and a personal passion for efficiency.
Allie earned an MBA in Marketing and Sustainability from the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado-Boulder and currently serves on the MBA Alumni board for the school. She is a proud Tar Heel, having both earned her undergraduate degree and previously worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Allie is also a StartingBloc Fellow (BOS’11) in social innovation. When not working with clients, you can find Allie teaching yoga, diving into a novel with a cup of coffee in hand, or hiking a beautiful Colorado trail.

Kelsey Kinzer
Storytelling Content Strategist

Kelsey is a theatre director and soon-to-be graduate of the MBA program at the University of Colorado Boulder, with a focus on marketing and entrepreneurship. Additionally, she is completing her MA in Theatre & Performance Studies, with a research focus on social media as a performance medium for communicating brand identity. As a creative marketing professional, she is a passionate storyteller and empathetic communicator who always puts people first. Previous work has been in content creation, dialogue facilitation, and arts management. She currently lives in Boulder, running a zero-waste Instagram and a microplastic-free glitter business in her spare time.

Lizz Carlson
Growth Manager

Lizz is an inquisitive, insightful professional with 7 years of marketing, consulting and project management experience.  While at Bain & Company she helped clients with portfolio strategy and consumer retention.  At a for-profit private international school in Switzerland, Lizz managed projects supporting the development of the school’s five-year plan.  After business school, Lizz honed her marketing skills at Anheuser-Busch InBev while developing marketing plans for Michelob ULTRA and Natural Light.  When she left the Michelob ULTRA brand team, it was the fastest growing beer in the country.  Lizz has an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in Marketing Management and Operations Management.  She also has an Undergraduate Degree in Psychology from Boston College.

Lizz likes to joke that she is a Product of Great Britain, Made in China.  She was born in Hong Kong to British parents, grew up in Singapore, and then moved to the US.  Having lived and worked on multiple continents, Lizz tries to keep a global, multicultural perspective and understands the importance of tailoring a marketing message to resonate with the target audience.
